Harvest
4th week of October. Prephyloxeric vines of more of 100 years old. Autochthonous vines, not coming from American rootstock.

Winemaking
Fermentation temperature between 28º and 30 º C. High concentration of polyphenols getting to 28 points of colour.
|
|
Ageing
Malolactic fermentation in new, French -oak, Allier barrels. Later on, it remains in the barrique for 10 months with its corresponding racking.
|
|
Tasting notes
Bright and clean, violet color, very deep. In the nose it is fresh, elegant and intense, with hints to fresh fruits: raspberries, strawberries and black currants. In the mouth it is fresh, meaty and very sweet, perfectly well-balanced and with very fruity notes. Long-lasting and attractive aftertaste.

Consum recommendation
It is an exceptional wine that needs to be decanted at least 30 minutes before its consumption in order it to be aired. We recommend to taste it between 18ºC and 20º C.

Gastronomy
It goes perfectly well with the greatest Spanish dishes, especially with red meats and game.
It is a wine which will be a perfect partner at the end of a meal, even with the desert and after the coffee time.

In the heart of the Rioja Denomination of Origin, in small "Carasoles" Elciego, still survive some old vines planted in the late nineteenth century, miraculously, by its special location, survived the deadly attack of phylloxera. This was one produced by the insect pest of the same name that hit the vineyards of Europe and the rest of the world in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The insect was first described in 1854, the United States. After several appearances limited, the plague came to power in 1868 in France was the country hardest hit initially. In Spain, first detected in Malaga and Gerona in 1877 and 1878 in the Rioja then spreads throughout the country.
The origin of phylloxera appears to have been imported from Europe with American vines to test the species and varieties new resistant to powdery mildew disease, also from America who had invaded Europe's vineyards in the mid-nineteenth century. The effect was a serious crisis that led to replant nearly all the vineyards of Europe using American vine rootstocks resistant to it.
Valdelana family has 4 acres of vineyard that miraculously survived this plague through several aspects: the calcareous clay soil, typical of the Rioja Alavesa, being a very poor area with very low permeability makes the vines have roots with a very short root system and the insect has not suficente sap for food. At the same time the vineyards are situated on a slope very giving of which underscores the lack of permeability of soil, water slides downwards quickly. These two reasons could be the reason for the phylloxera not find the appropriate support.
To these "survivors" strains CENTVM VITIS call them (old vines), which also gives name to our great wine that is here.
As you can imagine the family for generations to care and spoiled their vines as large as knowing that quality fruit is supreme.
Every year, small clusters manually collect these old vines and is made from musts from mime. Resulting in a tannic wine, round, aromatic, .. pure fruit, exalting their primal sleep quality for 10 months in French Allier oak barrels.
